Week 2 - 27th April 2020
Please click on the buttons below to download the daily activities for this week. As a guide, we suggest that you encourage your child to complete one numeracy, one literacy and one topic/play based learning activity each day, alongside their spellings and mental maths.
Please do not worry however if you don't get all of these completed - find a routine that suits YOU and go with that! |
Monday
NumeracyThis week, we will be learning about weight. Start a discussion with your child about what 'heavy' and 'light' means to them. Can they think of things that are 'heavy' and 'light' and maybe find a few items in their home that they think are 'heavy' and 'light?' How do they know? Challenge their assumptions by comparing...eg. 'a car is heavy, but is it heavier than a aeroplane?' Talk about how, when measuring weight, it is important to compare, because something could be lighter/heavier depending on what it is being compared to!
Explore this practically, encouraging your child to hold items to feel their weight; 1. Choose one item that will be your comparison tool. Every other item will be compared to this one. 2. Ask your child to choose items from around the house and sort them depending on whether they feel 'heavier' or 'lighter' than the comparison item. 3. You could use the sheet below to record your findings: Remember - BIGGER doesn't always mean HEAVIER!!

LiteracyEaster Holiday News - explain to your child that they are going to write a recount about their holiday as they would normally do in school. Firstly, read the teachers Easter news with your child (see button below). Ask your child to check the teachers news, looking out for punctuation such as capital letters, full stops and finger spaces, as well as interesting information such as what, where, who, when. Can you spot any examples of these?
Then using the same format as teachers example, please allow your child to complete their Easter News in their Literacy book or on a piece of lined paper. Please allow your child to complete this activity as independently as possible, to give them the opportunity to use their phonic skills to write words. |
Tuesday
NumeracyIntroducing scales; we will be using balance scales for the next few activities. If you have a set at home, great! Don't worry if you don't; you and your child could make a set together! Click the button below for instructions:
Talk to your child about 'balance' and what it means to them. Discuss how the balance scales help us to weigh things and explain how we know which object is heavier because it moves the scale down while the lighter object goes up.
Weigh some objects using your balance scales to find out which is heavier/lighter. Take some photographs and send them to your teacher on Seesaw! To reinforce the concept, your child could play this game: Alternatively go to:

LiteracyWord families - we call words with common letters and sounds word families. This week we are focusing on the 'ad' family. Here is a phonics song to reinforce this concept:
Please complete the -ad activity below:
To reinforce this concept, we have found a brilliant game on Study Ladder. In this game, your child must look at the picture to help them complete the word, selecting either 'an' or 'ad'. Please log into study ladder using the details that we have sent directly to you via seesaw:

Wednesday
NumeracyOrdering weight:
Gather a few items from around the house and challenge your child to use their balance scales to weigh them and arrange them in order from lightest to heaviest. Take a picture and send it to your teacher on Seesaw! Extension activity sheet: |
LiteracyRecap th - the 'th' sound is very cheeky, it allows us to stick our tongue out as we say it! There are 2 ways of saying the 'th' sound;voiced and unvoiced.
Helpful information on this sound: Complete this 'th' written activity:
Here is a little song that your child may also enjoy to help reinforce the 'th' sound:

NumeracyWeighing with non-standard units- weighing with different objects:
Explain that we can also use balance scales to find out how much an object weighs. By putting the object in one side, and something that we can count in the other side, we can find out its weight. Choose one item and try weighing it with lots of different things, eg. cubes/paper clips/beads/pasta shapes. Use the sheet below to record your findings: (Encourage your child to make predictions before weighing too!) Use this practical activity to prompt a discussion about how weighing with different objects isn't accurate; we still don't know how much our object weighs because it weighs a different number of beads to cubes and pasta shapes etc. This is why we need standard units when measuring!

LiteracyBug Club Reading Activity - please select the book your child is reading this week and click to complete the relevant activity.

Friday
NumeracyWeighing with non-standard units - weighing with the same object:
This time, choose lots of different items and try weighing them with one common thing eg. cubes/paper clips/beads/pasta shapes. Use the sheet below to record your findings: Discuss with your child how this system is much more accurate and we can now compare the weight of the objects fairly because they were all weighed using the same thing!
Can they now put the items in order from lightest to heaviest based on the weights they have recorded? |
LiteracyRecap ck - there are 3 different ways to spell this sound; c, k & ck. Ck is most commonly found on the end of words after a short vowel - knowing this will help your child with which sound to select. Here is a video to support your child with this concept:
Ck word reading game - please print off the word cards below. Place the cards around a table (or on the floor, however in school we use a table) face down. Play some music and when the music stops, your child must select the card closest to them, pick it up, say the sounds and then blend them together to read the word. Do not worry if the same word is chosen twice, this game is about reading skills.

Topic and Play Based Learning Ideas
Ready, Steady, Cook!
Look through child-friendly cookery books/ recipes online and pick something healthy you can make together. This could be something small like a healthy breakfast muffin or a full meal! Discuss the ingredients, cooking equipment needed and involve your child in the process as much as possible. As an extension you could write out the recipe to share with your friends on seesaw, don't forget to take a photo!

Playdough Creations
Can you create some tasty playdough meals? You could use cookery books or pictures online for inspiration or simply use your imagination to create something new! You could try adding some pasta shapes/ lentils for some different textures. Why not pretend you are the Head Chef of a cafe/ restaurant? Write out a menu and invite family members to order one of your delicious creations.

Life cycle of an Apple Tree
Where does our food come from? Have a look at some of the fruits and vegetables you have in your kitchen, what do you know about where they come from and how they grow? Check the packaging to see how far your fruit has traveled, why do you think the fruit or vegetables grow best in those countries?
A fruit that we have all eaten is an apple so we like to explore the life cycle of an apple tree. Can you complete the cut and stick activity and match the labels to the correct picture?

Signs of Spring
In your garden or out for a walk how many signs of spring can you spot? Play Spring Bingo with the printable fun bingo chart and see how many spring-themed items you can find. Why not have a go at making your own bingo card? If you do we would love to see a picture of it!

Cosmic Kids Yoga Adventure: The very Hungry Caterpillar
We hope you enjoy this Yoga session by Comic Kids!
We hope you enjoy this Yoga session by Comic Kids!
Children often find it difficult to understand that weight is not a concept of sight, and that if something is bigger it doesn't necessarily mean that it is heavier. A really fun experiment to help them with this is to fill some identical plastic bottles with different items. For example, fill one with cotton wool, one with rice, one with water, one with oil, one with paper etc... Even though the bottles are the same shape and size, they will all weigh differently depending on what is inside. Challenge your child to guess which ones will be lighter/heavier before they pick the bottles up to see if they are right!
