Week 7 - 1st June 2020
Please click on the buttons below to download the daily activities for this week. As a guide, we suggest that you encourage your child to complete one numeracy, one literacy and one topic/play based learning activity each day, alongside their spellings and mental maths.
Please do not worry however if you don't get all of these completed - find a routine that suits YOU and go with that! |
Monday
NumeracyThis week, our numeracy focus will be numbers to 100. To help with this, we will also be working on counting in 10s.
Encourage your child to join in and sing along with this fun song that teaches the sequence of counting in 10s. On the 100-square, ask your child to colour/circle the numbers that they say when counting in tens. They can use the video to help them if needed! Discuss the patterns and relationships that they can see, eg.
- the numbers go in a straight line - all of the numbers have 0 at the end - the first digit in each number is getting bigger by 1 each time - we are adding 10 each time It is important that your child can recognise and understand these patterns in order to grasp the place value of numbers to 100. Explain that the reason why the first digit gets bigger each time is because we have added another set of 10, ie. 30 is three sets of ten. Using feet is an excellent visual for this because each set of feet has 10 toes. Why not print this feet template and get your child to label each pair with the numbers 10-100. They could even use them to make their own 'hopscotch' where they have to jump to each set of feet whilst counting in tens! To practice this further, log onto your child's Study Ladder account and complete the 'Counting by 10s, Which Number is Missing?' and 'Hundreds Chart - Counting by 10' activities in the Week 7 pod:
Extension - to further extend and challenge your child, they could complete pg. 30 in the NHM 'Numbers to 20' booklet.
If you do not have your NHM booklet at home, please click the button below to download the page: *See the 'extras' section for more skip-counting by 10 ideas!

LiteracyFlat teacher adventure
Firstly, read the story of Flat Stanley with your child: Talk about the story together. Is this story fact or fiction? How did Stanley become flat? What adventures did Stanley go on? What happened at the end of the story?
Then explain to your child that their teacher/teachers love the story of Flat Stanley and all the adventures that he gets to go on - so it gave them an idea. We would love to see you, we would love to go on adventures and experience all the things that you are learning and although we can't - the flat teacher version of ourselves can! Please print the letter below and read with your child for more information: Then choose a flat teacher and cut them out using this template. You may want to cut out both and use them at different times!
Activity: You may have noticed in the letter, that your teacher was made flat by an evil villain! But why? How? Who is this evil villain?
This is your chance to be creative. We want you to create a wanted poster the evil villain! You need to:

Tuesday
NumeracyTap counting - using your hand or an object, tap the table/surface in a steady beat. Ask your child to count the taps out loud. Try this a few times for numbers below 20, and then progress to numbers beyond 20. Ask questions like;
How many taps in total? How many more than 20 is 21? What number comes next? Emphasise the use of the known sequence from 1-9 - it is the same for every 'set of ten.' Encourage them to count on from the number of taps you make. Number Line - show your child the 0-30 number line. - Count together whilst pointing to the numbers. Explain that the '2' means 'twenty' and the '4' means 'four', which makes twenty-four. Point out that the sequence is still 1-9, but they just have a '20' in front. Explain that this is the same for thirty, forty, fifty etc.. - Point to a few numbers and ask your child to say the number out loud. - Cover some numbers and see if they can figure out which number is missing. - Point to some numbers and ask which number comes before/after it. Find and Colour - Using a number square, play a 'find and colour' game. Give your child some colouring pencils and call out instructions, eg. 'colour 35 blue.' Repeat this for lots of different numbers. Start with a 50-square, or challenge your child by looking at numbers right up to 100.
Log onto your child's Study Ladder account and complete the 'Reading Numbers to 100' activity in the Week 7 pod:

Wednesday
NumeracyBuzz - to recap and continue practising the skills from this week, play Buzz with your child. Say aloud a sequence of numbers starting anywhere between 0-100. eg. '45, 46, 47, 48, 49' but instead of saying one of the nunbers, say 'buzz' instead. Eg. '45, 46, 47, buzz, 49.' Ask your child to identify which number was missing. They can use a 100-square to support them with this if needed!
Writing Numbers - Show your child how to write the numbers by listening to both parts eg. 'twenty' = 2 'five' = 5 Using a mini whiteboard or paper, call out some different numbers and see if your child can write them correctly. Log onto your child's Study Ladder account and complete the 'Writing Numbers to 100' activity in the Week 7 pod: Complete pg. 26 in the NHM 'Numbers to 20' booklet. Encourage your child to count by touching each picture or crossing it out.

LiteracySyllables - We hope that your child has become increasingly confident with syllables.
Today we are learning to move towards working syllables out internally, using brain power rather than using physical techniques such as clapping, stomping etc. For today's activity you will need clothes pegs and the syllable cards provided below. Cut up the cards, to allow access at the bottom of each (there are a lot of cards, sorted by number of number of syllables, so please don't feel you must use them all!). For each card:

Thursday
NumeracyNumber Card Sequences - lay out a sequence of eight to ten cards in order leaving some gaps. Have your child say the sequence out loud, identifying the missing numbers and inserting the correct cards (you could also use post-its for this, and ask your child to write the missing numbers to complete the sequence!)
Number Card Ordering - lay out a sequence of eight to ten cards in the wrong order. Have your child fix the order and say the correct number sequence out loud. Log onto your child's Study Ladder account and complete the 'Counting to 100' number line activities in the Week 7 pod:
Complete pg. 29 in the NHM 'Numbers to 20' booklet.

Friday
NumeracyBigger/Smaller - Explain to your child that whenever we are comparing numbers, we have to look at the first digit, and then the second digit. The number with the biggest first digit is larger, but if they have the same first digit, then the number with the bigger second digit is larger! They can also use a number line or 100-square to see which order the numbers come in in the sequence.
Game - Play a card game with your child using playing cards (remove the face cards and 10s before playing.) Both players should lift 2 cards and set them side by side to create a 2-digit number. Eg. if you lift a 4 and a 7, your number would be 47. Compare your numbers and the player with the biggest one gets a point. First player to ten points wins! (You could also use post-its or the number cards from Thursday to play this game). Log onto your child's Study Ladder account and complete the 'Comparing Numbers to 100' activity in the Week 7 pod:
*CHALLENGE!!!*
As a challenge to finish the week, give your child a blank 100-square and ask them to fill it in! You could even get them to time themselves and then try it again next week to see if they can beat their time! |
LiteracyThe 3 sounds of -ed
Last week we recapped past tense -ed words. The suffix -ed has 3 different sounds: id, t & d. This will be our focus for today: This can be a tricky concept, and you may find whilst completing today's activities that how -ed sounds can depend on dialect/accent. Here are some further examples:
Activity: Colour the sound of -ed
We are going to use colour to sort -ed words into the 3 different sounds that it makes. For this activity you will need to:
*Challenge* - To further extend your child, have a look through some story books/magazines/cook books. Can you find any -ed words? What sound can you hear at the end of those -ed words? You could even make a table with each of the 3 sounds (id, t & d) and sort the words into the correct section as you find them.
