Click the button below to learn some very impressive facts and figures about the RMS Titanic. They might help guide you when coming up with your taglines!

Thank you all for continuing to keep up with school work and for keeping in touch with me on Seesaw. I’ve been amazed by some of the things you’ve been doing!
Well done to those of you who spotted the mistake in my picture – the Titanic did have four funnels but only three of them were functional. Number four was mainly there for decoration! This week I’d like to begin to look at the ship just before it was about to launch. It was a massive deal for the builders, Harland and Wolff, as well as the owners, White Star Line. Excitement was building all over the world as the Titanic was given taglines such as 'Queen of the Ocean' or 'Unsinkable'. Exaggerations like this are called hyperbole and can be useful to make things seem even bigger or more impressive than they are, even though in this case the Titanic was already very impressive! Watch the video below to learn more about hyperbole, and make your own hyperbolic taglines for Titanic! |
Activities
World Around Us
This week, Titanic Belfast have made their Audio Guide available as a Virtual Tour online! Although the recordings were originally designed to be listened to inside the building (it told me to look at the display on my left, but when I turned I just saw my own kitchen door!), there are still some brilliant facts that will help you understand how things were in Belfast at that time.
I've prepared some questions for the more useful sections. Listen carefully to the section in bold to find the answers for my questions! |
Exterior
Linen
Thomson Graving Dock
White Star Conversation
A Grand Vision
Gates
- What do the tall pillars outside the Titanic building represent?
- What was Titanic called by Harland & Wolff before her launch?
Linen
- What dangerous work did the youngest workers do in the linen mills?
Thomson Graving Dock
- Who was Lord William James Pirrie?
White Star Conversation
- What did Bruce Ismay (Chairman of White Star Line) and Lord Pirrie want to do? What were the names of their superships?
A Grand Vision
- Who were Cunard and why did they cause problems for White Star Line and Harland & Wolff?
Gates
- What would happen to a shipbuilder if they were even one minute late for work?
Numeracy - Multiplication
Click the first button to find a link to a BBC Daily Lesson, recapping the written methods for short and long multiplication. You know how to do this, but it's important to keep practising and it's a useful reminder to use a placeholder zero in long multiplication as you drop down to multiply by the bigger number!
Once you've completed the live lesson and you're feeling more confident, click the second button below to download some problems for you to solve. The answers are on the second page for you to check your work.

Numeracy - Area and Perimeter
Finding the area or perimeter can be straightforward as long as you remember the rules.
The perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape (Top tip: Mark your starting point when you begin to go around the shape!). To find perimeter you need to add. The area is the amount of space that a shape takes up, so we have to focus on the inside of the shape. We give area measurements in square units (Example: cm² or m²). To find area you need to multiply. The video below explains it better, and to a beat! My favourite area and perimeter puzzles are compound shapes. Remember to use the clues to find the missing measurements, before you get started! Sometimes you have to split the shape up too.
The usual password will open the file from the button. Although the worksheet only asks for area, I'd like you to challenge yourself and work out the perimeter too. |
Once you've completed the worksheet, have a family member create some shapes to test you further. Or, create some shapes to test them! Just make sure you've solved your own shapes and worked out the answers beforehand, so that you can mark their work!

Literacy - Instructional Writing
This is a great time for us to try new things and learn new skills. One of the skills I know a lot of you have been practicing is cooking and baking. It's an incredibly useful thing to be able to do and judging by the pictures, there have been delicious results! This week I'd like you to write out a recipe that you could share with the class. It's very important to include a list of ingredients and to be really clear in your instructions. Personalise your recipe in some way by giving your dish its own name, for example: Mr Cooper's Chocolate Creations! I don't know what those are yet, but they sound right up my street.... If you have everything you need to follow your recipe, cook/bake it as well and make sure to take a picture, before it's all eaten! |

Art
I absolutely love receiving your work, especially your artwork! I have been blown away by some of the pictures I've received on Seesaw and will share some of them soon.
Art's a challenging subject, but these step-by-step videos can really help to make it easier. Here are three videos that show you how to draw the Titanic, but in completely different ways. Have a look at each one and decide which you'd like to try!
Just like we did with our horizon-line perspective pictures, you'll need to pause every now and then so your hand has time to catch up with the video. When you're finished, ask an adult to take a picture and send it to me over Seesaw! If you have a piece of art you're proud of (even if it isn't Titanic related) please still send it to me, as I know I'll be proud too.

VE Day
In November, you did such a brilliant job of marking Remembrance Day. This week celebrates VE day. The 8th of May has been declared as the official day of celebration. Below is a link to a video which will explain a little more about VE day and why it is important.
