11th May 2020 - Week 4 - The World's Largest Liner
Your excellent diaries described the enormous ship that you could see being built on the gantry at Harland and Wolff's shipyard. Pictures and drawings have shown us how magnificent and impressive it looked from the outside.
This week I would like you to research and explore the internal features of the Titanic. How many rooms were there? Was it really as luxurious as it was advertised? Was it equipped to live up to your hyperbolic phrase? What was life like for the 2000+ passengers on board? How did people manage to exercise whilst spending days crossing the ocean? Was everything the same for each and every passenger? Have a look at this BBC page to learn a bit more about the different classes aboard the world's largest liner. |
It's really wonderful to hear from you and learn what you're getting upto, as well as get a chance to see the fantastic work you've been doing. I hope that you've all had a chance to see this video, already on our school Facebook page. Remember to keep sending me pictures and videos, as I'll compile another video soon. Well done again to Conal, for providing the background music with his awesome drumming!
Studyladder and Mathletics
Please remember to log on and check out some of the resources available on Studyladder and Mathletics. I will continue to assign work on Studyladder, and you have the freedom to explore it and practise different subjects. Click the logos to visit the websites and login.
I would also encourage you to explore Mathletics, work on different parts of your maths and keep your skills sharp with Live Mathletics too! Remember, in Mathletics you can earn points and achieve certificates! I will keep monitoring this and if anyone gets enough points for a certificate, I will send it to you via Seesaw. If you're experiencing any issues with the websites, or need login information, please get in touch. |
Numeracy
An important part of maths is understanding the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages – realising that they are just different ways of telling you the same thing! How something is split up. If anyone thinks they just don't get fractions, offer to give them half of your chocolate bar but only give them one small piece. They'll quickly remember they know exactly what a half is!
I've assigned a couple of fraction and decimal related activities to your Studyladders, and have also included below a Mathletics booklet that we'd only used snippets of in class. It can be opened with the usual password, and is useful revision as it takes you through step by step. If anyone requires further resources, please let me know.

Here's a game you might also find useful to help work out fractions and their links to decimals!
Literacy
I really enjoyed reading your diary entries, written in character as children in 1910. This time I would like you to take on a different character. Create your own persona as a passenger upon the ship! Are you a rich member of high society, enjoying the most luxurious of all travel in 1912? Or are you a third class passenger, who has scrimped and saved but still cannot believe their luck that they’ve managed to nab a ticket to cross the Atlantic and visit New York? Remember, that although there is a big difference in classes in the Titanic, it was still the best Third Class travel available! But I’m sure having just two baths to share between 700 people could be more than a little frustrating…
Describe your experiences and use your research to help you. Your type of writing is up to you, it could be a letter home to a loved one, another diary entry, or perhaps you are one of the earliest travel bloggers... a budding journalist undercover to review White Star Line's latest luxury liner! Perhaps your experience is so exciting, it's almost as if nothing can go wrong...

Outdoor Classroom
When we're spending more time indoors than usual, it's important to safely step outdoors for exercise and also to continue the Outdoor Classroom that you're used to! The weather is getting better and better, and there are lots of things you can do. You could enjoy the shade under a tree like Layla, learn about some local history like Saul, do some work in the garden like Oliver, enjoy fresh air and bond with an animal as Victoria has done, create some art like Zach or see what birds are visiting your garden or the nearby areas like Carter and Riley!
I know even more of you have been continuing your Outdoor Classroom with your family, and enjoying the natural beauty that we're lucky to live around. Keep doing so and keep letting me know what you're up to!
