Week 8 - It's Summer Time! 08/06/20
For the next three weeks, our theme will be all about Summer! Usually at this time of year, the children are starting to wind down after a very busy term of learning new and challenging concepts in preparation for Year 1. In June, we usually try to take most of our learning outdoors; painting fences with coloured water, drawing/writing with chalk, having teddy bear picnics, washing toys, preparing for Sports Day, going to the beach, and making special visits to next year's classrooms! We want to reflect these types of activities in the Learning Zone. With this in mind, we've added a '30 Day Challenge' in our Outdoor Learning, Topic and Play-Based Learning and Fine Motor Skills Sections for Weeks 8-10 (8th - 26th June). The idea is to keep these activities as simple and creative as possible for you and your child. See how many of them you can complete in the month of June! Over these weeks, we also encourage you to enjoy the beautiful weather when it appears, eat lots of ice-cream, allow for plenty of free play time (preferably outdoors!) and pluck from the weeks' activities along the way.
In Literacy, our story of the week is 'Summer Days and Nights' by Wong Herbert Yee, where a little girl shares her favourite aspects of Summer. We'll also continue to work on the difficult skill of hearing and saying initial sounds. In Numeracy, we'll be building on the knowledge of previous number recognition and ordering activities and start to learn about practical number problems.
Let's Learn All About Summer!
Let's think about what we already know about Summer using our senses. Our senses are what we use to see, smell, hear, taste and touch. With an adult, take it in turns to think carefully about how you could finish the following sentences in our 'Summer Senses' activity. You might like to do this activity outside and close your eyes so that you can focus on your different senses!
Summer Senses:
Summer Senses:
- In Summer, I see...
- In Summer, I smell...
- In Summer, I hear...
- In Summer, I taste...
- In Summer, I feel...
Once you have finished the 'Summer Senses' activity, click on the button below and see if you can guess from the clue what's behind our special binoculars! Have you seen any of these things in real life? Make a list of the summer sights you see this week!

Song of the Week - Mister Sun
This week's song is Mister Sun. First, listen to the song, then learn the words line by line. Can you come up with some actions for the song?
Oh Mister Sun, Sun, Mister Golden Sun, Please shine down on me! Oh Mister Sun, Sun, Mister Golden Sun, Hiding behind the tree. These little children are asking you, To please come out so we can play with you. Oh Mister Sun, Sun, Mister Golden Sun, Please shine down on me! |
