8th June 2020 – Week 8 – World Ocean Day!
Today is World Ocean Day, something we at Mill Strand should celebrate because of our close connection to the beach and the ocean.
There are also a number of different activities on live throughout the day, for all sorts of ages! Don't worry if you're reading this on a different day, the videos should still be stored and can be accessed by clicking on this picture. Go to the website and explore the different activities suited for your age. There is a lot on offer! No matter what day it is, send in pictures of you celebrating World Ocean Day! As this is World Ocean Day, this week's Learning Zone page will be water focused! I've heard a lot of different ideas for your projects and have loved seeing you choose topics that mean a lot to you – keep working at it and get in touch if you have any questions or need any help/support. Once you've chosen what you want to research/create, think about how you are going to do so, because even a rough plan can make a big difference!
I have not set a deadline for this, it is your project so I am giving you both freedom and responsibility to manage your work! |
Pobble - Watery World
We've used Pobble before many times in class for sentence improvement and story writing. Click the picture to visit the page. This week, the story starter begins:
Sean was the only person who had taken notice of the warning. A great flood had swept over the planet, and now life was very different... Continue the story and take it in the direction you want to go! How did Sean know there was a flood coming? What caused it? How is life different now? Have a go at all the activities, including Sick Sentences and designing the perfect underwater home! |
Homophones - See and Sea!
Last week you looked at synonyms (similar/same meaning) and antonyms (opposite meaning). This week I'd like to jog your memory on homophones (same sounds but different meanings).
Click the picture to go to a BBC page and watch a video to give you more examples of homophones. Then, try the activities below. There are three documents to open below. Read each sentence carefully and think about the context to help you choose the correct word. Take one activity a day and answers are included with each one, so check when you're finished! |
Maths Mystery
Choose the mystery you would like to solve with your maths knowledge and unlock with the usual password. Both mysteries are a challenge but the Missing Pirate Treasure is a little harder with the decimal addition that's required. If you choose it, think carefully about the columns that each digit sits in...
Let me know if there are any issues opening either file. Use paper to help you with your working out and feel free to use a calculator to double-check your answers before you eliminate suspects!
My top tip for both mysteries is to write out any large calculation, make sure you put the numbers into the usual columns as you set up your sum and that will keep you right! Answers are included.

Science Experiment - Still Crazy!
Now that you know more about evaporation, condensation and precipitation, try out this experiment to see for yourself! Warning: This will require patience (and heat) to get the best results!
You may be able to guess by the illustration what will happen, but think about how it happened. Click the button underneath the experiment to explain the process and learn the verb beginning with 'd' for what you have just done to the water!
