Nursery Castles Numeracy Ideas
Week 3 - 4/5/20
This week, we are focusing on recognising and identifying simple shapes.
even though we will be learning all about shapes during our Castle Topic we still recommend that you choose a daily 'Counting Warm Up Game' before starting the other numeracy activities below. This will help your child to continue to embed and practice counting and number recognition skills. I've included 3 new number practice games this week along with our shape activities but please feel free to revisit the number games from our Spring topic too. |
Counting Warm Ups
Counting SpotsClick on the link below to play the ladybird counting game. Try to count, match and order the numbers 1-5 for an extra challenge you can try numbers 1-10
|
Roll and BuildWhat do you need - a dice, some construction toys.
How to play - roll your dice, count the spots and build a tower with the correct number of bricks. Extra Challenge - Try to guess how many dots are on your dice before you count Team Games - each player needs to build a set of towers from 1 block - 6 blocks. Roll your dice to build your tower. If you already have a tower with that number of blocks - miss a go. The winner is the first player to complete the challenge and build all 6 towers |
Active NumbersWhat do I need - a dice or some number cards, some homemade exercise cards.
How to play - First think of some different exercises or ways to move your bodies and work with a grown up to draw these exercises to make your own exercise cards. Place your exercise cards face down on the floor and roll your dice or pick out a number card. Pick up an exercise card then count your dice and do the right number of exercises |
Week 3 - Shape
Shape Song
|
Listen to this shape song. Can you name the 4 shapes - circle, square, triangle, and rectangle?
Use your magic finger to draw circles, triangles, squares and rectangles in the air. Can you make big shapes and small shapes. Draw your shape in the air and ask a grown up to guess what shape you are making. Want an extra challenge? What other shapes can you think of and make? Do you know the shapes star & heart? |
Shape Bingo
Download the shape bingo boards below or make your own. Once your bingo boards are ready ask someone to be your bingo caller. Each time they call a shape and colour that matches your board you can cover it with some paper or a counter. When you have covered all your shapes shout 'Bingo' as fast and as loud as you can! The first player to shout bingo and cover all of their shapes is the winner.
|
Feed the Shape Monsters
The Shape monsters are so hungry but they can only eat the correct shapes. Try your best to feed the shape monsters all their shapes. Then have a go at making your very own shape monsters. Don't forget to send some photos of your scary shape monsters on seesaw.
|
Shape Prints
Use some old cardboard toilet roll tubes to make shape stampers and make your very own shape prints and designs. If you don't have any spare toilet roll holders ask a grown up to carve some shapes into a potato and use this for your prints.
Want an extra challenge - why not make a repeating pattern with your shape stamps. Don't forget to upload some photos |
Shape Shield
All of the bravest knights needed a shield to protect them when they were guarding their castles. Have a go at making your own shape shield. Use lots of different shapes to decorate each section of your shield. You could try sorting our shapes in each section as an extra challenge. Don't forget to practise you shape knowledge by naming each shape as you stick it on.
|
Name the shape
Click on the buttons below to download some shape games. The first game will ask you to find a shape but be sure to look carefully you will have three to choose from. The second game is very tricky, you have to guess which shape is hidden behind the binoculars.
For an extra challenge why not get an adult to hide some shapes under a blanket then sneakily take one away when your eyes are closed - can you guess what shape they have hidden? |
Week 4 - 11/5/20 Shapes In The Environment
This week we will be continuing to develop our knowledge of shapes. Last week we concentrated on naming and identifying simple shapes, we will build upon these skills this week by beginning to identify the shapes of different objects in our environment and recognise that some shapes are best used for different purposes e.g. circles are better for wheels than squares.
As well as the shape activities set out in this weeks Learning Zone it is important to build upon and practise these skills daily and by finding, naming and identifying shapes throughout the day. This can be done informally by making simple observations during daily routines 'Look our plates are a circle shape' or through quick interactive 5 minute games like I spy or I went to the circle shop and I bought a clock, a wheel, a ball.. etc with each player taking turns to remember the previous items and name a new one (this game is great for developing working memory and attention and listening skills too). |
Shapes all around song
|
Watch this weeks shapes video. In the video they find lots of different shapes all around them can you name the shapes as you sing along? Choose the correct picture for each shape at the end of each section. As an extra challenge can you think of any shapes you might see in your house?
|
We're Going on a Shape Hunt
For this activity you need to become detectives but not just any detectives - Shape detectives! Make some special shape spotting glasses by cutting glasses from card and decorating them with your favourite shapes. Now you are ready to go on a shape hunt all around your house and garden to see how many different shapes you can find. Before you start download the shape hunt power point for some clues about what kind of shapes you might find. You can choose to record your results on by drawing them on the sheet provided, drawing them in a notebook like a real detective or by using your ICT skills to photograph the shapes you find on your hunt! I can't wait to see photos of your shape hunt and find out what exciting shape discoveries you make.
|
Shape Feely bags
Ask a grown up to go on their own shape hunt for this activity. Once they've found their shapes ask them to hide them in a bag but don't peek. Put you hand into the bag without looking and find an object, use your hands and fingers to feel the shape and try to guess what shape it is. Grown ups encourage your child to feel for sides and corners as well as size and weight as they feel the different objects in the bag. This activity can be very tricky the first time you play so it's a good idea to play this a few times across the week to practice using different objects each time.
Playdough Shapes
Can you use your playdough to make some shapes from the environment. Think carefully about what shapes are best for each object you are making. I've included some playdough mats as an example but you could also use your dough to make the shapes and objects that you found during your shape hunt.
Shape Pictures
Use shapes cut from card, coloured paper or tissue paper to make your very own shape picture. Think carefully about what shapes you will need for each piece of your picture before you start. Once you have finished name each shape you have used and for an extra challenge you could even count how many of each shape you have used. Don't forget to share a photo on seesaw.
If you enjoyed this activity you could download the apps 'MyFirstApp' Shapes 1 and MyFirstApp Shapes around the world. These apps allow you to use shapes to build pictures and complete shape jigsaws. These apps do offer in app purchases so please make sure children are supervised by a grown up - however the free versions are great and do not need topped up. |
Shape Sort
Ask an adult to tape out the shapes square, rectangle, circle and triangle for you (or chalk then on the ground outdoors if the weather is sunny). Take a bag and collect some different objects from your home and garden. When you have finished making your collection come back to your taped out shapes, look carefully at each object you have collected and sort them into the correct category.
