Numeracy Week Beginning 11/05/20
Maths Topics for the week Shape and Space
Reasoning
Our Learning Intentions for the week are
Use language such as circle or bigger, to describe the shape and size of flat shapes
Begin to name flat shapes such as circle, square, rectangle,...
Use a variety of shapes to make pictures and patterns, and describe them
Put sets of objects in order of size
Talk about, recognize and recreate patterns: for example, simple repeating or
symmetrical patterns in the environment
Match objects, pictures or children themselves, justifying the decisions made

Today we are learning about shape. We will be introduced to/reminded of a circle, triangle, square and rectangle
1. To start off your lesson, have a little watch below and sing along to remind your little one of some of the shapes we will be exploring today.

1. To start off your lesson, have a little watch below and sing along to remind your little one of some of the shapes we will be exploring today.
2. Have a set of shapes ready, could be drawn out on card/felt or maybe you have some plastic shapes at home. Show your child a shape and name card together like the picture below.
Give your child a separate box of assorted shapes. Ask your child to find a square in their box and hold it up. Place in a hoop/box/area of floor like pictures below. Continue until all the squares in the box are found and sorted.
Repeat the task for the triangles, rectangles and circles.
Remove all of the shapes from their hoops/areas on the carpet and return them to the original box, created the assorted box of shapes again.
3. Lift up a shape out of the box, show it to your child and ask them to name it.
Repeat for each shape - circle, triangle, rectangle, square.
Repeat for each shape - circle, triangle, rectangle, square.
4. Play a little game with your child. Ask your child to choose a shape from the box. You also choose a shape from the box but don't let your child see until you are both ready. Ask your child questions such as...
5. Show your child the pictures below and ask them questions such as...
- Hold your shape up in the air if it is the same as mine
- Hold your shape up in the air if it does not match mine
- Put a square on your tummy
- Hold a circle on your head
- Can you find a shape that looks like a ball
5. Show your child the pictures below and ask them questions such as...
- How many circles?
- Can you point to a long shape? Do you know what it is called?
- What shape is the roof of the house?
- How many triangles do you see?
6. Pupil Activity - can you make a shape picture using one shape, for example a picture of a caterpillar using circles and of course a lovely smiling face to have a happy caterpillar, or what about a triangle dog like the one below.

Today we are taking our learning of shapes a little further and using shapes to explore pattern.
Today we are taking our learning of shapes a little further and using shapes to explore pattern.
1. Watch the short clip introducing the new word of the day "Pattern".
2. Using a set of squares and circles, show your child how to build up a pattern like this.
Ask your child to describe the pattern using shape names "square, circle, square, circle...", using colour "red, blue, red..." and using colour and shape names "red square, blue circle, red square...".
Ask your child at the end, "what shape comes next?".
Create a few more patterns and repeat the introduction activity. See a few examples below.

Create a few more patterns and repeat the introduction activity. See a few examples below.
3. Ask your child to copy a pattern you have created or one from the pictures above. Then ask your child to continue the pattern to make it longer, ensuring they are continuing the same pattern they started with.
Repeat this a few times, ensuring they understand and can do this practically before moving on.
4. Pupil activity - encourage your child to use other objects around the house or paint a repeating pattern. Can they do it with 2 different items, for example doll, teddy, doll, teddy, doll AND then with 3 different items, for example, carrot, apple, pear, carrot, apple, pear, carrot. Wrapping paper is also great topic of discussion, asking the child to describe the paper, encouraging the child to notice the shapes, colours, patterns.
Please see some ideas below.
**Also if you have been doing some seed planting at home, you could use some seeds before planting to create a seed pattern by sticking the seeds on paper, or simply setting them out or what about trying to plant some seeds in a pattern and watch them grow :)

If you would like an activity sheet to go along with todays activity, an option will be provided on Seesaw - Pupil Sheet 28.

Today we are learning all about matching pairs of identical objects or those that are similar.
1. To introduce todays lesson enjoying playing one of the online games, matching the sound to the farm picture or a game of snap.

2. Make up a collection of objects from around the house, objects that you know there will be more than 1 of. For example, your box might include, a fork, cup, shampoo bottle, toothbrush, teddy.
Show your child one of the objects in your box and have them go find an object the same or very similar.
Repeat until the child has matched all of the objects in your box.
3. Pupil Activity - give your child opportunities to match pairs or items which are similar around the home. A great matching task is matching together pairs of socks and pegging them onto a washing line (fine motor development too), or matching knives and forks, egg and egg cup, glass and straw etc.

Today we are continuing to explore matching pairs of identical objects or those that are similar and go together.
1. To introduce the lesson today play a game of snap or memory, turning all snap cards upside down and taking turns to turn over and match.

2. Pupil activity - Can your child make up their own memory cards which use shapes and colours, tying in Monday and Tuesday learning and challenge you to a game. Please see picture below for an example; this picture is using lots of different shapes and sorting by emotion. We recommend playing using the 4 shapes we explored triangle, circle, square and rectangle and exploring those with some colour involved.
Friday 15/05/20
Today we are looking back over shapes and patterns.
1. Remind your child of the four shapes by showing them a picture or item and asking them the shape; triangle, circle, square and rectangle.
2. Using your box of shapes again, ask your child to independently sort the shapes without your input this time.

3. Pupil activity - Ask your child to draw or paint a large square, circle, triangle and rectangle (pupil activity sheet 27, on seesaw, can be used to give children the initial opportunity to draw these shapes).
Using the shapes your child has painted/drawn, allow them to collect household items to sort with the correct shape or allow your child to find smaller items to collect/cut and stick, such as stamps, postcards, magazines, making some shape posters. See some examples below.

4. To complete your child's learning for today add a name label to each shape and ask them to tell you about their shape posters.
To finish, a little pattern game to have some fun playing.
