Numeracy Week 5
Week beginning 18/05/2020
Maths topics
Counting and reading and writing numbers
Measures - capacity
Our learning intentions are:
Recite the number names in order, continuing the count forwards or backwards
from a given number
Count reliably up to 10 (or 20) everyday objects
Use language such as more or less to compare two quantities, then more than
two, by filling and emptying containers

Today we are learning about capacity – full/empty/nearly full/nearly empty/half full!
Today we are learning about capacity – full/empty/nearly full/nearly empty/half full!
- Give your child free play with a variety of containers of different shapes, sizes and materials. Allow them to explore these containers with water/sand/pasta/grains etc. They should get experience of pouring from one container to another, filling containers full and nearly full and handling a variety of containers.
2. If possible, use a set of transparent containers such as different sized glasses, jugs, jars, canisters, bowls etc. Fill one to the top with water, one nearly full, one half full, one nearly empty and one empty. Take each container in turn and discuss whether it is full, empty, nearly full, nearly empty or about half full. Empty the containers and ask your child to fill them following your instructions e.g. ‘Fill the jug so that it is half full.’ ‘Fill the jar so that it is nearly full,’ etc.
3. Complete the Studyladder POD ‘Monday 18thMay’.

Today we are exploring capacity and learning about comparing the capacity of different containers!
Today we are exploring capacity and learning about comparing the capacity of different containers!
- Wrap an elastic band round different transparent containers such as glasses, jugs, jars, canisters, bowls etc, or, using a felt tip pen, draw a line on the containers. Ask your child to fill the containers up to the line. Discuss whether they are full, empty, nearly full, nearly empty orabout half full etc.
- Watch this short cartoon about capacity.
3. Select two containers – one big and one small such as a mixing bowl and a cup. Fill the cup with sand (or rice/grains etc). Ask your child to pour the contents into the bowl – ask ‘is the bowl full?’ Through discussion, lead your child to the idea that the bowl is not full because the bowl holds morethan the cup and the cup holds lessthan the bowl. Repeat with other pairs of containers.

Today we are learning more about capacity!
- Watch this short BBC Bitesized clip about capacity and complete the first activity below it.
2. Complete the Studyladder POD ‘Wednesday 20thMay’.
3. Select a pair of containers where the difference in capacity is not obvious, e.g. a jug and a pie dish. Ask your child which container they think holds more. Ask them to fill one with water and pour it into the other. Ask them which one holds more and how do they know? (All of the water from the jug has gone into the pie dish but it’s still not full). Repeat with a container which holds less than the jug. Discuss with your child that it can be hard to tell which container holds more just by looking at them. This is a way of finding out which container holds more.

Today we are consolidating counting to 10!
Today we are consolidating counting to 10!
- Watch this fun video and count along! Complete the missing numbers activity below the video.
Extension – scroll down and watch the counting from 10-20 video and complete the activity.
2. Collect a number of small items such as toy cars, buttons, stones, Lego blocks etc. Show your child a number (or a number word) between 1-10 and ask them to make a set the same size as this number. Use numbers between 10-20 if you feel your child is ready for this. Once they have made their set, ask a variety of questions to get your child thinking about adding and subtracting. Ask questions such as ‘how many would you have if you took one item away?’ ‘How many would you have if you added another item?’ ‘How many would you have if you had two less?’ ‘How many would be in your set if you had two more items in it?’ Use different mathematical language each time you ask a question so that your child gets used to the different ways maths questions can be asked.
