"I sneezed a great sneeze" wind science experiment.
This experiment, linked to our story this week of 'The True Story of the Three Little Pigs', can be performed rather easily by just grabbing a few objects from around your house. (Science shirt/lab coat optional!) The observation sheet is optional, you could perform the experiment without! (observation sheet will be sent via seesaw)
MATERIALS
- 3 objects of varied weight
- hair dryer, fan, or your very own breath (Huffing and puffing)
- prediction and observation sheet
You could use a tissue, paper, a plastic Duplo block or piece of lego, Playdough. Decide on what form of “wind” you would like to use.
1) Before you begin blowing, ask your P1 to predict which items would be blown away by the wolf’s huffing and puffing/sneezing! Allow them to hold the items and make comparisons and record these predictions on the observation sheet if you choose. This would be an excellent opportunity to discuss comparative vocabulary such as light, lighter, lightest or heavy, heavier, heaviest. They can draw a picture of their prediction and label it if they wish.
2) Once predictions are made, test the materials. One by one, set each item out and BLOW!
3) To wrap up this fun wind experiment, ask your little scientist if their predictions were correct, were there any that weren't. Refer back to the story, together hopefully you'll be able to make comparisons to the materials they were able to blow and the one that didn’t move at all.
Have fun!
