Nursery Spring Early Numeracy Ideas
Week 1 - 20/04/2020
This week, we are focusing on recognising the numerals 1 to 5. We recommend that you choose a daily 'Counting Warm Up Game' before starting the other numeracy activities below, as it builds a solid foundation for counting fluency and focus for the activities ahead. See ideas below for how you can practice these activities at home!
|
Counting Warm Up Games Bank
We love counting in Nursery! There are so many ways that we can practice counting at home. For example, we could count out how many chairs/plates/cups/spoons/forks are needed for our family at lunch time.
See how many times you can count things during the day! Before you start a numeracy activity this week, here are some other counting warm up games that you could try. Send your teacher a picture of your frog jump counting on Seesaw! |
Too Many Frogs!
Can you count to help the frogs jump onto the lily pad? See if you can recognise the numbers 1 to 5 by yourself! Click here to play! |
Frog
Jump Can you jump like a frog? Starting at 1, frog jump all the way to 10! Can you jump higher next time? Can you jump and count the tiles in your house/garden? |
Counting Forwards
Pick any number from 1 to 9 and practice counting forwards from that number, all the way to 10. |
Stand
& Sit Stand and sit for alternate numbers. Stand for 1, sit for 2... All the way to 10! Can you come up with 2 different actions? Try clapping high/clapping low for alternate numbers. |
Today's
Number Pick today's number from 1 to 10. Think of a funny action. Count all the way to 10 doing your funny action instead of saying today's number! Remember, don't say the number! |
Week 1 - Recognising Numerals 1 to 5
This week, we are working on recognising the numbers 1 to 5. Have you tried going for a number hunt around your house? See how many numbers 1 to 5 that you can find! Below are some activities that will help you to practise looking for and recognising the numbers 1 to 5.
Rosie's Garden
Rosie has been busy planting seeds. Can you help Rosie count how many flowers have grown in her flowerbed? Choose the right number to match the amount of flowers. Click on the powerpoint below. |
Frog Number Recognition
Make a pond in a tub out of rice. There are lots of frogs swimming in the pond. Can you find a frog? What number is shown on the frog? Can you match the frog to the lily pad showing the same number? Click and print the pages below, or make your own at home! |
Number Recognition
at Home Click on the page below and choose one of these great activities to find the numbers 1 to 5 in your home or when you're out for your daily walk. Send your teacher a picture of your favourite activity on Seesaw! |
Week 2 - 27/04/2020
Number After
This week, we are focusing on identifying which number comes AFTER any of the numbers on a number line from 1 to 5. The first steps of recognising which number comes AFTER are firstly, recognising the numbers 1-5 and secondly, becoming familiar with the number line 1-5. The three activities below progress from Number Recognition (revision from last week), to Number Ordering (creating a number line) and finally, to the Number After.
In Nursery, we often repeat the same activities a couple of times a week to consolidate a new concept or topic. Young children need repetition to learn and to move new information from their short term memory to their long term memory. The children also enjoy the familiarity of repeating an activity and feel a sense of achievement when the activity is easier the second time around!
Remember, before you start one of the numeracy activities below, choose one or two of the counting games from the 'Counting Warm Up Games Bank' above to help focus. These should be quick and fun!

Activity 1: Number Recognition
Look at the image of the Number Matching Caterpillar below. Listen to the adult's instructions. An adult will ask you to match up the number 1 ball with the part of the caterpillar's body that says '1'. Can you draw an imaginary line with your finger to match up the numbers? If you'd like to do this as a cut and stick activity instead, the printable file is attached below. You could also create your own number matching activity at home! Don't forget to send your teacher some pictures!
|
Activity 2: Number OrderingCan you help the caterpillar put his body back in the right order? Click on the link below to put the numbers 1-5 in order! Remember to choose the following settings before starting the game: 'Ordering' then 'Forwards 1-5.' We plan to do further work on number ordering later in the term, so if your child finds this task tricky, write out a number line 1-5 as a reference while they complete the activity!
|
Activity 3: Number After
Let’s pretend that we are going to feed the caterpillar’s tummy with some tasty fruit! Choose a piece of fruit and set up your caterpillar number line in order from 1 to 5. (Download the printable file below, or you can make your own caterpillar number line at home!) Ask an adult to call out a number from 1 to 4. Put your piece of fruit on the number AFTER the number the adult calls out, i.e. if an adult calls out the number 2, put your fruit on the number 3. Now, it's your turn to call out a number! See if the adult can find the number AFTER the number you have called. Check to see if they got it right!
If you'd like a challenge, extend your caterpillar number line all the way to 10. Play the game the same way, except this time, an adult will call out a number from 1 to 9. |
